Check em out during CPW or REX. Queer West Queer West is an organization that wants to make West Campus gay again. An admirable goal! They started because, as I said above, the East-side of MIT was much more visibly queer. One event that they do is called Coming Out Camping. Basically, you sit around making smores and telling coming out stories. Ive gone twice so far: during CPW and during REX. Its a great time to really get to know more people, especially those who have gone through a similar experience as you. Others There a few other groups that Im not very involved in. Theres a Gender Fluidity Group, Affiliated (they work with fraternities/sororities/independent living groups), [emailprotected], and many more! He also pushed me to be more social, which never worked, but I appreciated nonetheless (shout out to my boi Peter, the 3rd coolest dude on campus). But, Im extremely thankful for all my friends. Theyve made my time here all the better and easier. Another facility that has helped me a lot is the MIT Mental Health clinic. I meet with a counselor about twice a week to discuss issues of gender dysphoria and social anxiety. Im really happy with the care Ive been receiving on a personal basis. Additionally, the Mental Health clinic hosts a gender support group every week where we just meet up and talk about different things that are bothering us. Ive been finding really helpful and fun. I advise everyone to make an appoint with MIT Mental Health is something is seriously interfering with your life or school work. The people that work there really do care about making sure students are okay. This post has been kind of a mess, and I dont have much more to talk about since Ive only been here for like 4 weeks, but Im excited to get more involved with MITs queer community. So far, Ive felt really welcome just about everywhere Ive gone on campus. I also cant wait to keep blogging! In the article, Michael Booth a driver of a truck succumbs to electrocution when his truck hit low-slung power lines when working for Canberra Companies Kennos contractors. The workplace was not conducive, making it risky for the driver. The following gives the workplace description. Workplace Description Despite the formation of various acts by the ACT Worksafe to safeguard working places and ensure workers safety, Canberra Construction Company did not provide the necessary safety to the workers. The working environment was full of risks and hazards, which was dangerous to workers. For instance, the electric wires, which were hanging and finallyelectrocuting the truck driver, were avoidable hazards (Tylor, 2015).Hanging power lines are dangerous and for the company not to consider themhazardous, was ignorance. There were no signs on the power lines or a flag indicating danger; this was total ignorance. The company had no remorse for the losses that most of the employees were having. After the death of Booth, there was no documentation from the company explaining how the incident happened and how remorseful they were in losing a worker (Tylor, 2015). This helps us understand the working place for this construction company. The working environment was unsafe for the workers. Workers had no protective clothing when at work (Tylor, 2015). At some point, this company had a case where a painter fell down and died due to injuries to the head. This is an avoidable instance in that a helmet would be of help. With this condition of the workplace, it is very unsafe for any worker and any employment happening is against the set rules and standards (Knaus, 2012). The conditions, highlighted in the above discussions, show the hazards that were predisposing factors to harm. The risk factors contributing to the breach were avoidable, but preventive measures were not in place before the occurrence of the safety breach. The hazard that we find in the article is the low-slung power line, which was exposed. This hazard is avoidable when effective preventive measures are in place. There are many preventive measures which when applied, could lead to the avoidance of safety breach. Some of these measures are engineering control measures, substitution and isolation control measures (Gharaie, Lingard Cooke, 2017). Power lines are very dangerous on any construction site, and so precautions have to be in place before the damage occurs. There are several precautions, which when considered could have saved the life of the driver and the future of the company too. First, before the establishment of a construction site at that place, safety and risk manager could probably have pointed out the risk (Hegeman, 2013). This means that no risk manager was involved in choosing the construction site as the present risk manager within site had no qualifications. When deciding on a workplace site, companies should involve risk managers to identify any risk available and analyze the danger of the risk, before establishing a site or abolishing the site.Electrocution of the driver was an avoidable condition; it is only that the company did not put in place the preventive measures. Secondly, the company could install different signs at the power line; this will send a message to workers of the available danger. Whenever any point in a site is hazardous, indicating by use of different methods will help prevent any safety breach from occurring. In this incident, the company could install flagged warning lines to mark both the horizontal and the vertical power lines and thus helping workers to understand where there is a danger. With flagged power lines, every worker or a visitor within site will know of the availability of the hazard at that point. Many companies employ this measure in preventing electrocution or other minor injuries caused by electricity. It is a preventive measure, which keeps everyone alert of the danger (Kim, Lewko, and Garritano, 2016). Training workers is also a method that could prevent the breach from happening. Training is an important aspect that helps to prevent workers from hazards and risk which they could easily avoid (Demirkesen Arditi, 2015). Workers should undergo various training to understand the different types of hazards; they should be enlightened on hazard identification and hazard avoidance (Demirkesen Arditi, 2015). The worker needs to be enlightened on their rights and in case of any risk they have to report. Training gives employees authority and voice which is important for every employee. Apart from preventive measures associated with the hazard, there are administrative control measures which when put in place will prevent a breach from occurring. The company should employ a qualified risk manager who would help in identification of the hazards and risks and work towards eliminating or reducing the effects of the hazards (Zhang et al., 2013). Training of the employees is also part of administration role to help prevent them from hazards that can easily be avoided. If the company had all these preventive measures in place, the safety breach would not occur. The security breach was an avoidable scenario, and it occurred out of ignorance and negligence. Incident description From the article, we get to understand the incident and what happened to the construction site. A truck driver, working in the site was delivering the materials for construction. At the point of delivering material, there were power lines which were lying low. This was a hazard dangerous enough to cause death but wasn't addressed. The truck of the driver hit the power lines, and finally, the driver succumbed to electrocution. This incident was one that could be easily avoided by the company, but the company did not put any measures in place. The company was very irresponsible that they did not remorse the death of the driver, the company also tried to hinder investigations of the drivers death. A security officer at the company tried to alter the attendance records of the driver; this was to clear evidence (Tylor 2015). All this indicate how irresponsible the company was to his employees. The incident occurred due to the state of which the company was regarding risk management provision. The company did not consider the life of a worker as important. It valued the services provided by the workers most and not workers safety. This describes why the company was not able to employ the preventive measures to help avoid such an incidence. First, the compensation fee or the fine given to the company could be made slightly high, maybe 1.5- 1-8 million dollars, this would be a huge amount of money that will make other contractors careful with safety measures. The Safe Care team should always enlighten workers on the need to having a voice at a workplace. Whenever an incident occurs on a construction site, they should give training to the workers who by any chance did not undergo the safety training. Workers should also undergo training to identify the different hazards and how this hazards can be avoided and reported. When safe care embarks in doing this, most of the workers will be enlightened, and the country will have reduced cases of accidents at the construction site (Sacks, Perlman Barak, 2013). Every company, either small or big, should have safety rules that govern it. A company running without the safety rules, is at risk of causing injuries to workers (Ozmec et al., 2015). The safety rules will define to workers on the procedure to follow in case they identify a hazard. Safe Care should employ different mechanisms in which they are able to identify companies with no safety rules (Ozmec eta l., 2015). Prevention should be Safe Cares priority and not handling the matter after the incident. The following are some of my suggestion on how I would have addressed the problem the in the company if I were among the workers. Identifying the hazard and taking the appropriate measures could be my priority. Workers in any company have other roles to play, they are not limited to performing the duties allocated to them but should be concerned with their health and safety (Perlman, Sacks Barak, 2014). Communicating to the management would have been my first step when no actions are taken in, would move to the external forces like Safe care. Companys ignorance and negligence on the hazard that was visible enough on the site led to the death of the driver. This is enough to stop the company from proceeding further with their construction. Biography of Augusta Savage, Sculptor and Educator Augusta Savage, an African American sculptor, struggled to succeed as a sculptor despite barriers of race and sex. She is known for her sculptures of  W.E.B. DuBois,  Frederick Douglass,  Marcus Garvey; Gamin, and others. She is considered part of the  Harlem Renaissance arts and culture revival. Early Life Augusta Christine Fells Savage  lived from February 29, 1892, to March 26, 1962. She was born Augusta Fells in Green Cove Springs, Florida to Edward Fells and Cornelia (Murphy) Fells. She was the seventh of fourteen children. As a young child, she made figures out of clay, despite religious objections of her father, a Methodist minister. When she began school in West Palm Beach, a teacher responded to her clear talent by engaging her in teaching classes in clay modeling. At college, she earned money selling animal figures at a county fair. Marriages She married John T. Moore in 1907, and their daughter, Irene Connie Moore, was born the next year, shortly before John died.  She married James Savage in 1915, keeping his name even after their 1920s divorce and her remarriage to Robert L. Poston in 1923 (Poston died in 1924). Sculpting Career In 1919 she won an award for her booth at the county fair in Palm Beach. The fairs superintendent encouraged her to go to New York to study art, and she was able to enroll at Cooper Union, a college without tuition, in 1921. When she lost the caretaking job that covered her other expenses, the school sponsored her. A librarian found out about her financial problems, and arranged for her to sculpt a bust of African American leader, W.E.B. DuBois, for the 135th St. branch of the New York Public Library. Commissions continued, including one for a bust of Marcus Garvey. During the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta Savage enjoyed growing success, though a 1923 rejection for a summer of study in Paris because of her race inspired her to get involved in politics as well as art. In 1925, W.E.B. DuBois helped her get a scholarship to study in Italy, but she was unable to fund her additional expenses. Her piece Gamin brought attention, resulting in a scholarship from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, and this time she was able to raise money from other supporters, and in 1930 and 1931 she studied in Europe. Savage sculpted busts of Frederick Douglass, James Weldon Johnson, W. C. Handy, and others. Succeeding in spite of the Depression, Augusta Savage began to spend more time teaching than sculpting. She became the first director of the Harlem Community Art Center in 1937 and worked with the Works Progress Administration (WPA). She opened a gallery in 1939, and won a commission for the 1939 New York Worlds Fair, basing her sculptures on James Weldon Johnsons Lift Every Voice and Sing. The pieces were destroyed after the Fair, but some photos remain. Mental illnesses are the most common affecting mental health today. The two most common mental disorders being depression and bipolar disease. There are several factors in which researchers believe contribute to mental disorders. Some researchers believe that the most severe mood disorders are caused by imbalances in the brain’s chemical activity. Researchers also believe the environment can play a part in mood disorders and it may run in families. Some mood disorders may be easier to diagnose due to the symptoms that the patient is showing, while others may be a little more difficult and require more testing due to the mood disorder going unrecognized. The good news is that with the proper medication and psychotherapy a person afflicted with a mood disorder can go on and live a productive life. With mood disorders such as bipolar disease and depression being so prevalent in the United States, is there more we should be doing in regards to research to curtail the number of people of who are affected? Bipolar disease is a mood disorder which is defined by extreme mood swings and â€Å"regular† behavior. Researchers believe that this particular disorder runs in families. This mood disorder usually begins in a person’s middle twenties and last throughout their lives. If gone untreated this mood disorder has devastating effects like divorce, job loss, and possibly even suicide. Symptoms of this mood disorder are increased energy, less need for sleep, inflated self esteem and poor judgment among other things. It is really hard to diagnosis someone with this disorder unless they are given a full medical evaluation. There are no lab tests to diagnosis someone with bipolar disease. Effective treatments are available that greatly reduce the suffering caused by bipolar disorder, and can usually prevent its devastating complications. However, bipolar disorder is often not recognized by the patient, relatives, friends, or even physicians. People with bipolar disorder may suffer needlessly without proper treatment, for years or even decades. Also, many patients do not respond to at least one drug, and many show no response to several. This means that combination treatment is often the rule because a combination of different drugs with different methods of action can be more effective without increasing the risk of side effects. Lithium is still the most used drug overall in mania, but mood stabilizing anticonvulsants are also widely used† (Bipolar Disorder, 2007, para.3). Depression is a mood disorder described as a person’s feeling of sadness extending past a couple of weeks. Three to four million people in America are afflicted with disease which is more prominent in women. Researchers are still unsure which brain mechanisms actually cause this mood disorder. Depression affects a person’s appetite and sleeping patterns. The person may also lose interest in activities that they enjoyed before. The person will also experience suicidal thoughts and behaviors. To really diagnosis someone with depression they must display some of the above mentioned symptoms longer than two weeks. There are also different terms associated with these mood disorders. The term clinical depression means that an episode of depression shown from a person was so great that it requires medical treatment. There is major depression when the disorder is so great that a person is unable to get themselves out of bed. Finally there is seasonal affective disorder in which the disorder is associated with the seasonal changes in the amount of available daylight. A good example of this is when we turn our clocks back an hour in the Fall for Daylight Savings Time. There are several types of therapy available to help people with this disorder like: interpersonal therapy, behavioral therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy when small amounts of electricity are applied to the scalp to affect the neurotransmitters in the brain. Medications used to treat this particular mood disorder are: tricyclics, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Mood disorders are serious mental illnesses which affect many people in the United States. The most common being bipolar disease and depression. The difference between the two is that bipolar disease cannot be diagnosed with a lab test; you have to have a complete medical evaluation to diagnosis this disorder. The sad part is that by the time you go for a medical examination you may of done things to disrupt your life and the life of others. In most cases people who suffer from bipolar disease do not realize what they are doing during an episode and are off their medication. It makes me think of a guy I work with whose wife suffers from this disorder. She would go off her medication because she felt fine and go missing for a couple of days. There are also the days when she has an episode at home and the police come to the house. The sad part is that there is a young child is involved, so not only is the mood disorder affecting her it is affecting the rest of the family. The good news is that there a good portion of people who have this mood disorder are being treated and are able to live normal lives and hopefully with more technological advances we will be able to combat mood disorders all together and make America a greater society. Dealing with Attendance Issues People take days off and are sometimes late for work. That is a given. The most common problem is when people take days off when they are not sick, such as wanting to stretch the weekend into 3 days, but when they really are sick, they come into work because they have run out of sick days. This is not good for the employee or other employees as they can become sick. The real problem, however, happens when they call out sick after they have exceeded the sick days allowed for the year. You cant turn a blind eye to this behavior and it is unfair to those who make it a point to come to work everyday and are on time. It is usually just a couple of employees who are the culprits. It is especially hard to deal with attendance problems with a person who is otherwise a great employee. Nonetheless, you have to deal with it, and with equality to all. Here are eight points to keep in mind on how to control and possibly reduce attendance issues: Make sure your employees understand your view towards attendance. Make it a point to share your passion towards having a low absentee and tardiness department. Your supervisors also really need to fully understand the attendance expectations as they are on the front line and will see the infractions much more easily than you. If HR has not created one, have an attendance policy that clearly lays out the guidelines. Also lead by example by getting to work a bit early, leaving a bit late, and rarely, if ever, call out sick. Have your employees call you direct instead of their immediate supervisor. They might think twice knowing you, the manager, will answer the phone or hear the voice mail. Maintain accurate records. There are easy to use software programs to track attendance. You can even use something like your Outlook calendar to make a note of each infraction. Create easy to use codes to not take up too much space. For example, instead of John Doe called out sick or John Doe was 15 minutes late, use something like JD-S or JD-15m. Look for trends. If you see an employee call out on a Friday or Monday, chances are they are taken advantage of sick days for pleasure. If you see an employee call out at the end of the month when your department is at its busiest, you most likely have someone who is not a team player. If an employee is always around 5 to 10 minutes late, its not just a one off traffic jam but someone who just is not making the effort getting ready and to work on time. You might even see repetitive signs of sickness or tardiness with the employee looking like they have been partying all night. You want to address these trends as soon as possible. Individual problem have a one on one meeting. Multiple people hold a team meeting. When you have an individual or two who are repeat offenders, you want to deal with them separately. Dont punish all for a few problem employees. However, when you are seeing a trend with multiple members of the team with attendance issues, you need to hold a team meeting and show the statistics. Stress how it can damage the achievement of goals. Reducing absenteeism might even turn into a goal in itself. This will show all that you are serious about attendance, and how their attendance is important to the overall success of the team. Stress that you should not have to hire more people to achieve the goals due to poor attendance. This will put on certain peer pressure that can work to your benefit, especially if you offer a reward to the team if they achieve an attendance record you have set. Allow for personal business. It is better for your employees to be up front and tell you the truth. There might be a few occasions when someone needs to take some time off in the day to handle something that can only be dealt with during business hours. Just make sure they do not take advantage of this gesture. Create an award program for those who do not call out or are tardy for a certain period of time. It can be a paid day off or other ideas that were given in lesson 3. It shows that even though you are a stickler regarding attendance, you want to show your appreciation to those who make it a point to show up to work and being on time. Have them make up time missed to make up for time lost. Depending on state laws and company policy, this may be an option. If not, can they use some of their vacation time, or get no time if they have already used up all of their sick time? The no time means they would not get paid for the time missed. It would affect hourly/non-exempt employees much more. Steps to take when dealing with attendance problems: 1. Counsel and verbal warning: E-mail, or get their attention privately as to not embarrass the individual, to meet in your office. Start off by stating you are concerned over the absences or tardiness. Establish the reasons and determine what needs to be done to improve the attendance issues. If the problem does not appear to be a major health issue of any sort, you should advise the employee that an improvement in attendance is expected, or the next step in the procedure will be taken. There should be no more attendance problems for the following 6 months. Monitor the attendance monthly and proceed to step 2 if the problem continues. Document this meeting and consider it a verbal warning, not a written warning. You should notify HR if there are any medical issues that can possibly keep the employee out of work for any length of time. If the doctor confirms fitness for work, the employee needs to be warned about the consequences of continued absence. 2. First written warning: If the employees absences continue, set up a second meeting. State the purpose and be prepared to discuss the reasons for the absences. Talk about the implications and how it affects the team and department, not to mention the company, and warn that if the problem continues, employment may be suspended and/or terminated. This all depends on how HR has set up the attendance policy. Document this meeting and consider it a written warning. Monitor for improvement, if there are still problems, go to step 3. 3. Second written warning or suspension: If there is still no improvement, consult with HR on what should be done next. If you can, and would like, set up another meeting with the same criteria as described in steps 1 and 2. Listen to what the employee has to say, and let them know you will get back to them to determine the next step. You can either give another written warning stating the next infraction is automatic suspension and/or termination, or go straight to the suspension stage. Again, this is determined on the existing HR policy. 4. Suspension and/or termination: If no improvement in attendance occurs, you should proceed with a temporary suspension without pay. The intention to suspend should be confirmed in writing with details of start and end dates. HR will be involved and your presence may or may not be required. It is imperative that you have documented every meeting with exact detail. This might be needed if it ever goes to court. If it is determined that the employee should be terminated, the employee should be advised that as a result of excessive attendance issues, they will be dismissed. At this point, HR policies regarding pay and benefits will be discussed. Before you take drastic measures with all that has been discussed so far in this lesson, make sure the problem is not morale related or some other underlying issue. The fault might be yours due to departmental cracks, which you will need to find out what is wrong and fix as soon as possible. There might also be a problem with the time clock, parking situation, or scheduling that you should do your best to fix, or come up with an alternative solution.
